Would you believe next year marks the 30th anniversary of a true ‘data pioneer’ revolutionising how we shop by shifting the focus from generic promotions to personalised offers based on behavioural data.
In 1995, following a late 1993 trial, the Tesco Clubcard loyalty program was officially launched. Instead of treating all shoppers the same, Tesco analysed individual buying habits to tailor offers, improve stock decisions, and build loyalty – transforming data from a back-office asset into a front-line competitive advantage. An advantage it still holds in 2024, with Tesco Clubcard membership reaching into 23 million out of a total of 28.3 million UK households (approximately 80%).
Since those mid 1990s days, data has evolved from basic mailing lists and spreadsheets to powering real-time dashboards and predictive analytics. What was once static and manual is now dynamic, intelligent, and driving smarter business decisions every day.
From search histories and location data to voice recordings and biometric scans, the information we generate daily fuels everything from recommendation engines to predictive analytics. It is now become a far more, frankly, terrifying prospect than identifying a cat owner and offering them a voucher for discounted pet food.
Now as we enter The Machine Learning Age or the Cognitive Era, with artificial intelligence (AI) continuing to evolve, the intersection of data privacy and machine learning raises new ethical, legal, and technical questions that are critical for individuals and organisations alike.
At its core, data privacy is about the proper handling, processing, storage, and usage of personal information. This includes ensuring that individuals have control over their data and understand how it is collected and used.
AI systems are inherently data-hungry, relying on vast datasets to train models, identify patterns, and make decisions. However, this dependence brings several challenges.
Are Users Really Aware?
In today’s digital landscape, users often aren’t fully aware that their data is being used to train AI systems. Much of this data is collected passively, through browsing habits, app usage, or interaction, and hidden within long, complex terms of service agreements. Consent is technically obtained, but transparency is often lacking.
Bias and Discrimination
AI models are only as fair as the data they learn from. When datasets reflect existing societal biases, such as those related to race, gender, or socioeconomic status, AI can perpetuate or even amplify these issues. Without proper oversight, this can lead to discriminatory outcomes, especially in sensitive domains like hiring, lending, or law enforcement.
Data Security Risks
The more data an organisation collects and processes, the greater its exposure to cyber threats. AI development often involves storing vast volumes of personal and behavioural data, making systems lucrative targets for attackers. A breach can reveal not just raw data but also inferred insights that are even more revealing.
The Right to Be Forgotten
Legal frameworks, like the GDPR, give users the right to have their data deleted. But with AI, especially deep learning models, it’s unclear how to effectively erase data that has already influenced a model’s behaviour. Once data is baked into the training process, “forgetting” it becomes a complex technical and ethical challenge.
So, what can we do?
To responsibly harness AI while respecting privacy, individuals and organisations can adopt some fairly robust key principles:
- Minimise Data Collection: Only gather what’s necessary for your AI system to function. Avoid collecting or retaining sensitive data unless absolutely essential.
- Anonymise and Encrypt: Strip out personally identifiable information before training models, and ensure all stored data is encrypted.
- Promote Clarity and Accountability: Develop AI systems that can justify their decisions and allow for external audits. Transparency builds trust.
- Privacy by Design: Embed privacy considerations into every stage of AI development—from data sourcing to deployment—rather than treating it as an afterthought.
As AI becomes more embedded in daily life, ethical data practices must evolve in parallel.
Ensuring transparency, fairness, and respect for user rights isn’t just a legal obligation—it’s how you earn trust, one small step at a time.
